I was born in Hüls, Northrhine Westphalia, West Germany and completed by primary and secondary schooling in Moers, Northrhine Westphalia. After a year-long exchange program and graduation from Forest Grove High School, Forest Grove, Oregon in 1986, I completed my German high school degree (Abitur) in 1989 at the Aufbaugymnasium Moers, in Moers, West Germany. Subsequently, I served in the West German Air Force as a medic for one year. I then entered the Universität Duisburg Gesamthochschule, Duisburg, Germany, and continued my studies at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, during Spring Quarter 1991. I graduated with a B.A. in Secondary Education and International Studies from Western Oregon State College, Monmouth, Oregon, in December 1992. After working at South Salem High School in Salem, Oregon, as a high school English teacher, I entered graduate school at Portland State University, where I earned an M.A. in English and an M.A. in German in 1995. During the summers of 1995 and 1998, I worked as Lecturer and Activities Director at Die deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik at Portland State University in Oregon. In September 1995, I entered the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin, where I taught as an Assistant Instructor in the Department of Germanic Studies. During this time, I also worked as an in-house and freelance translator for two years. In September 1999, I joined the faculty of Berea College, Berea, Kentucky, as a full-time Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages and finished my dissertation in the summer of 2000.
