Thomas was born in Hüls, West Germany and grew up in Moers, near Düsseldorf, where he lived for 22 years. After a year-long exchange program and graduation from Forest Grove High School, Oregon in 1986, Thomas returned to his German high school to finish his German Abitur (High School Diploma) in 1989. After a year in the West German Air Force as a medic, he entered the Universität Duisburg Gesamthochschule, Germany, and continued his studies at the University of Oregon in Eugene. His studies lead him to Western Oregon State College (BA) and Portland State University, where he earned an M.A. in English and an M.A. in German in 1995. That year, he entered the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin, where he taught as an Assistant Instructor in the Department of Germanic Studies. During that time, he also worked as an in-house and freelance translator for two years. In 1999, he joined the faculty of Berea College in Kentucky, as a full-time Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages and finished his dissertation in 2000. After a successful and rewarding 13-year college teaching career, he continued his translator career and founded Bosch Translation Services, LLC. In September 2008, he earned ATA-certification for translations from English into German.
